GSI and FAIR are aware of their impact on the environment, in particular the enormous energy consumption caused by the operation of the accelerator. For this reason, GSI and FAIR take various measures into account in order to make the operation of the research institutes more sustainable.

To reduce the impact on the environment, especially due to the enormous energy consumption, GSI has been sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable energy sources since January 1, 2023 and FAIR since July 1, 2023. According to the energy supply company, these are TÜV Süd-certified hydroelectric and wind power plants in accordance with the guidelines of the register of guarantees of origin at the Umweltbundesamt. These certificates guarantee transparent documentation of the origin of the electricity and provide GSI and FAIR with the necessary reliability that the electricity they purchase actually comes from renewable energy sources.

By switching to 100 % green electricity, GSI was already able to save around 15,000 tons of CO₂ equivalents in 2023 - this corresponds to the average annual electricity consumption of around 13,500 German households. The purchase of green electricity therefore makes a significant contribution to reducing indirect emissions from externally generated energy sources and is another important step towards the sustainable development of the research institutes.

In 2023 a total of over 50 smaller and larger energy efficiency measures were started or implemented. The aim of these measures is to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency, but also to improve other aspects such as operational safety and thus contribute to a more sustainable modernization of the campus overall. The measures range from lighting and the replacement of refrigerators and incubators to constructional measures on hall doors and facades and scientific infrastructures such as cryogenic compressors.
