Research and Development (RD)
The Beam Instrumentation Research & Development group is responsible for the developments of novel beam diagnostic instruments, the related analysis methods as well as for optimization of existing devices. The diagnostic instruments, which are subject of our research are either installed at the existing facility (UNILAC, synchrotron SIS18, storage rings ESR and CRYRING and the connecting transport lines) or will be part of the FAIR accelerators (Proton-LINAC, SIS100, CR and HEBT). The development of diagnostic components for FAIR is our main task until the project is finished. Members of our group are responsible as work package leader for the FAIR Proton-LINAC beam instrumentation and sub-systems at other accelerators.
Instruments and diagnostic methods are evaluated on all design steps, i.e. from theoretical investigations and simulations up to the commissioning of the ‘final product’ for accelerator operation. It comprises of the mechanical realization, the design of hardware and software, proof of applicability as well as the commissioning and in situ operation in the accelerators. The instruments are used during regular operation as well as for dedicated accelerator developments and, if required, are constantly improved.
Examples for present topics of investigations are:
- Highly sensitive beam current measurement using a super-conducting SQUID-based transformer
- Beam position determination by innovative Beam Position Monitors on a wide range of applications at LINACs and synchrotrons
- Beam profile measurement by Screen Monitors, Ionization Profile Monitors and Beam Induced Fluorescence Monitors in all energy ranges
- Longitudinal bunch profile monitoring by special Bunch Shape Monitors
- Tune and further lattice functions at synchrotrons as measured by sensitive BPMs and evaluated by dedicated analysis tools
- Design of a closed orbit feedback system for synchrotrons
- Significant contributions to accelerator developments for LINACs and synchrotrons using advanced instruments and diagnostic methods
For the beam instrumentation at FAIR, we are responsible for production of the required specifications of diagnostic devices, the steering of the fabrication process and testing of prototypes, in collaboration with other GSI groups and international partners.
The R&D group is part of an international network for accelerator technology. Dedicated projects funded by German and European agencies are managed by the group members. A large fraction of design, realization and testing is done in the frame of master and PhD theses, where innovative concepts are evaluated on a scientific level. Regular attendance in academic trainings and international conferences is part of the group members’ activities as required for the demanding tasks. Accelerator physics lectures at University Frankfurt, Joint University Accelerator School JUAS and further training programs are led by senior group members.
