SPARC PhD Award 2024

Quelle: Lea Wunderlich

This year's SPARC collaboration PhD Prize was awarded to Dr. Stephan Dickopf (University of Heidelberg and Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics) for his thesis entitled “High-precision Penning-trap measurements of the magnetic moments and hyperfine splitting in hydrogen-like beryllium-9”. The award recognizes excellent experimental work of Dr. Dickopf, focused on the high-precision determination of the nuclear moment of beryllium-9 and the zero-field-splitting of its hyperfine structure. The achieved accuracy exceeds the one from previous measurements by up to two orders of magnitude, which makes beryllium-9 an excellent reference sample for other nuclear moment measurements. The results of this work were recently published in Nature (S. Dickopf et al., Precision spectroscopy on 9Be overcomes limitations of nuclear structure, Nature 632, 757 (2024).

21st SPARC Topical Workshop 6th – 10th, Sept. 2024 at the University of Münster

This year the Topical Workshop of the international SPARC collaboration took place at the University of Münster with 61 participants from 27 institutes of 11 countries. The overall scientific program of the workshop covered the following topics:
  • Atomic Collisions with Highly Charged Ions
  • Critical and Super-critical Fields
  • Laser and X-ray Spectroscopy
  • Cross-link between Atomic and Nuclear Physics
  • Beam times 2024-2025
  • Status of FAIR facilities and Instrumentation
  • Status of the SPARC Collaboration

Particular emphasis was put, amongst others, on recent scientific results of the experimental campaigns in 2024 at the ESR and CRYRING@ESR as well as significant progress in commissioning of the HITRAP facility. Furthermore, the variety of novel instrumentation for CRYRING@ESR and the newly funded BMBF collaborative research projects for laser cooling at SIS100 have been presented as well. The participants enjoyed 33 talks and a poster session with 15 contributions in the 5-day-workshop. In particular, 4 talks by members of the Institute for Nuclear Physics at the University of Münster underlined the strong commitment of the local groups in SPARC and FAIR. We thank the local oranizers as well as Lea Wunderlich for hosting the meeting in a welcoming atmosphere.
