Chinese delegation visits FAIR and GSI
Perspectives and possibilities of future cooperations were primary focus during the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) delegation’s visit at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) and the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt. The scientific exchange was initiated already 40 years ago; by now the scientific and technical cooperations have developed successfully and intensified further on many research areas: from hadron physics to nuclear and atomic physics up to accelerator physics. Now the partners set course for the future.
On behalf of FAIR/GSI the Scientific Managing Director Professor Paolo Giubellino and the Research Director Professor Karlheinz Langanke as well as further representatives participated in the meeting. Members of the Chinese delegation were Professor Wenlong Zhan, President of the Chinese Physical Society, as well as representatives of the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) of CAS, led by the IMP Deputy Director Dr. Hongwei Zhao.
During their stay in Darmstadt Professor Paolo Giubellino gave the guests an overview of the current state of the FAIR project. The Chinese visitors reported on the present status of the High Intensity heavy ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) projected in China. Important topic during the meeting was the further cooperation, e.g. in research and technical developments for FAIR and HIAF and in promoting of young scientists’ education and exchange. Based on the results of the discussions the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between GSI and IMP will be extended to FAIR and expanded for another five Years, thematically widened by mutual accelerator developments. Following the discussions the guests did a guided tour on the site and visited several stations on the FAIR/GSI campus.

Perspektiven und Möglichkeiten der künftigen Zusammenarbeit standen im Mittelpunkt des Besuchs einer Delegation der Chinesischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS) beim Beschleunigerzentrum FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) und dem GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt. Der wissenschaftliche Austausch begann vor 40 Jahren, mittlerweile hat sich die wissenschaftliche und technische Kooperation auf vielen Forschungsfeldern von der Hadronen-, Kern- und Atomphysik bis zur Beschleunigerphysik sehr erfolgreich entwickelt und weiter intensiviert. Nun haben die beiden Partnerseiten Weichen für die Zukunft gestellt.
Für FAIR/GSI nahmen der wissenschaftliche Geschäftsführer, Professor Paolo Giubellino sowie Forschungsdirektor Professor Karlheinz Langanke und weitere Vertreter an dem Treffen teil. Der chinesischen Delegation gehörte Professor Wenlong Zhan, Präsident der Chinesischen Physikalischen Gesellschaft (Chinese Physical Society) an sowie Vertreter des Instituts für moderne Physik (Institute of Modern Physics, IMP) der CAS, angeführt vom stellvertretenden IMP-Direktor Dr. Hongwei Zhao.
Bei dem Besuch in Darmstadt gab Professor Paolo Giubellino den Gästen einen Überblick über den aktuellen Stand des FAIR-Projekts. Die Gäste aus China berichteten über den Staus der in China geplanten Beschleunigeranlage HIAF (High Intensity heavy ion Accelerator Facility). Ein wichtiges Thema des Treffens war die weitere Zusammenarbeit, beispielsweise bei gemeinsamen Forschungs- und Entwicklungsthemen für FAIR und HIAF sowie bei der Förderung des Austauschs und der Ausbildung junger Wissenschaftler. Basierend auf den Ergebnissen der Gespräche wird die bestehende Grundsatzvereinbarung, das „Memorandum of Understanding“ (MoU) zwischen GSI und IMP auf FAIR ausgedehnt und, thematisch um gemeinsame Beschleunigerentwicklungen erweitert, um weitere fünf Jahre verlängert. An die Gespräche schlossen sich ein Rundgang übers Gelände und der Besuch mehrerer Stationen auf dem FAIR./GSI-Campus an.
