Lead Developer Reconstruction Software (all genders)
GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung is a leading particle accelerator centre for fundamental research located in Darmstadt, Germany. At the GSI site, currently the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research is being constructed with international cooperation, one of today’s largest science infrastructure projects worldwide. The CBM (Compressed Baryonic Matter) experiment is one of the major experiments to be conducted at this new facility. CBM will investigate strongly interacting matter by measuring heavy-ion collisions, with the ambitious aim to achieve very high interaction rates. The experimental concept foresees real-time data selection in software, which requires highly performant and efficient algorithms for event reconstruction.

Lead Developer Reconstruction Software (all genders)

The successful applicant will to take a leading and coordinating role in the development of fast and efficient algorithms for the reconstruction and analysis of CBM experiment data, for both online and offline application. He/she will take in particular responsibility for the development, deployment and maintenance of the Cellular Automaton track finder as the backbone of event reconstruction in CBM, including the establishment of software-based alignment procedures. The applicant will coordinate and steer all development activities in CBM for reconstruction software, bringing it to production readiness for the start of experiment operation in 2028. Emphasis has to be put on the application of the software in real-time, making use of massive parallelism on CPU and/or on GPU.
Your profile:
From the applicant, we expect
- a doctoral degree in physics or computer science,
- a strong background in algorithm development for high-performance computing, including profiling, monitoring and quality assessment,
- good knowledge in track reconstruction methods,
- familiarity with current computer architectures,
- experience in large high-energy nuclear or particle experiments,
- good English language skills, both spoken and written, and
- experience in software project management, including planning and reporting.
We are looking for a person combining expertise with team-player ability, who is interested not only in algorithmic developments but also in transforming them into a running system.
We offer to the successful applicant a challenging position at the forefront of nowadays technology, in the context of an international collaboration of about 400 members.
Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund). The position is unlimited and starts in August 2025.
