GENCO Award 2023

During this year's meeting of the FAIR-GSI Exotic Nuclei Community (GENCO) as part of the NUSTAR annual conference, the Young Scientist Award was presented and three new members were admitted. The FAIR-GENCO Young Scientist Award went to Dr. Daria Kostyleva from GSI/FAIR. On the occasion of the award ceremony, a special colloquium entitled

"A1900, 20 Years of RIB Production"

was held by Professor David J. Morrissey,

who plays a leading role in the field of nuclear chemical research at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory of Michigan State University (USA).

Dr. Daria Kostyleva received the Young Scientist Award for discovering several new isotopes beyond the proton truncation, studying the three-proton decay of 31K, and for her recent contributions to future medical imaging and possible oncological therapies using radioactive beams as a member of the BARB Collaboration (Biomedical Applications of Radioactive ion Beams).

In addition, the GENCO community honored with membership:

  • Professor Dario Vretenar (University of Zagreb, Croatia) for outstanding contributions to modern theoretical nuclear physics and in particular for a novel approach to describe nuclear structure and dynamics based on chiral perturbation theory for nuclear matter in the medium
  • Dr. Jürgen Gerl (GSI/FAIR) for the development of gamma spectroscopy of relativistic rays at GSI/FAIR and elsewhere and for his tireless work as technical coordinator of NUSTAR over many years
  • Professor Luis Fraile (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain) for the use of new, fast scintillator materials in connection with the pioneering development of short pulse spectroscopy and its application to the study of short-lived excited states in exotic nuclei at various research institutions worldwide
