Research Scientist (PhD m/f/d) in Nuclear Physics
GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.
The FRS/SFRS Experiment department of GSI is one of the major partners for nuclear physics experiments and application of radioactive beams. It performs experiments and developments at the cutting edge of modern nuclear science. The department operates and maintains the fragment separator FRS, a high-resolution separator and spectrometer for heavy-ion and exotic-nuclear-beam experiments, and conducts an original research program with exotic nuclei, exotic atoms and hypernuclei. The group also prepares for novel experiments at the next-generation super-conducting fragment separator Super-FRS of the international accelerator facility FAIR.
The FRS/SFRS Experiment department offers a full-time Tenure Track position for a
Research Scientist (PhD m/f/d) in Nuclear Physics
Posting ID: 24.177-1230
Position overview:
We are seeking a Research Scientist to conduct research with high-intensity primary and secondary beams at the (Super-)FRS of GSI and FAIR. You will develop an individual scientific profile with exotic nuclei in flight, with stopped and thermalized ions, or with exotic atoms or hypernuclei. You will be integrated in activities of the NUSTAR and Super-FRS Experiment Collaboration, participate in user experiments and scientific-technical developments ongoing at the FRS of GSI and prepare for new experiments at the Super-FRS of FAIR.
Main activities:
- Preparation, realisation and evaluation of experiments of the Super-FRS Experiment collaboration with the (Super-)FRS in the fields mentioned above
- Development of experimental campaigns in the field of exotic nuclei incl. strategic planning, preparation and realisation of beam times of self-initiated experiments
- Participation in beam times of the FRS/SFRS Experiment department, with internal and external collaboration partners, mainly at GSI
- Collaboration in (Super-)FRS experiments and supervision of various scientific and technical activities related to experiments with primary and secondary beams
Education and experience requirements:
- PhD in the field of experimental nuclear physics
- Several years of experience in experiments with secondary beams
- Self-motivated, able to integrate into an experiment team and to work well within the team, with experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution, and the ability to work independently as well as in multidisciplinary research teams
- Excellent planning, organizational and communication skills, necessary to deliver presentations and prepare written publications, and reports
Desired qualifications:
- Experience with complex simulation programmes (e.g. GICOSY, LISE++, Mocadi)
- Experience with data analysis programmes (e.g. root, go4, origin, excel UHV)
- Experience in data acquisition, software development and modern programing languages
We offer an interesting and challenging position in a vibrant international research environment. The position is initially limited to a duration of 5 years. After successful evaluation, the position will become permanent.
Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
GSI supports the vocational development of women. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply for the position.
Handicapped persons will be preferentially considered when equally qualified.
Inquiries concerning the position can be send to Prof. Dr. Christoph Scheidenberger (c.scheidenberger(at)gsi.de).
Information about FAIR and GSI is available at www.gsi.de and www.fair-center.eu.
Applications should include:
- A letter which exhibits the record of accomplishments and expertise, the candidate’s research interest and future goals, especially outlining the planned research activities in the Super-FRS Experiment Collaboration
- A CV, list of publications, including a commented selection of the five most significant ones
- Names of three possible references
If you find this position interesting and challenging and would like to work in an exceptional, international scientifically excellent environment, please send your application documents with information of your earliest possible starting date and the Posting-ID 24.177-1230 aboveto the following address by January, 20th, 2025 at the latest
